The current direction of my work is primarily photography montage (the technique of producing a new composite whole from fragments of photographs). The Lamplighter ©2024 - I began this photo montage with a landscape image from the area of Princeton, NJ as the background. The sky was overcast and nondescript so I added color along with texture from an old daguerreotype. Despite it being mid June with an abundance of greenery, there was an odd row of tall, leafless trees with branches reaching toward the sky like long, spindly fingers. The building is the ruins of the Old Stone Union Church and burial ground in Long Valley, NJ. Constructed in 1774, the name “union” refers to the fact it was built to serve the congregations of both the Lutheran and Presbyterian churches. After 58 years, the two groups built their own churches and sadly, the union church was left to crumble and decay. The two stately gargoyles guarding the entrance were not part of church building, but were photographed outside a storefront in the township of Oxford, NJ. I captured the lovely, ornate replica of an 1800’s street lamp on the sprawling grounds of Best of France Antiques in Doylestown, PA. (This is an amazing place to visit not only for the large assortment of antiques, but the life-size dinosaur statues roaming the grounds as well.) The street lamps of that era were lighted manually, carrying a ladder from lamp to lamp just before dusk and extinguishing them in the same manner at dawn. However, the young lady in this piece (from my vintage photo collection) seems to have dispensed with any equipment needed other than her feathered familiar and the crescent moon talisman she wears around her neck symbolizing womanhood, intuitiveness, psyche and empowerment. Add a touch of photokinesis (the ability to mentally manipulate light) and “The Lamplighter” has completed the task at hand.
This Sunday January 28th from 2 to 5 pm, Hamilton Street Gallery will be hosting an exhibit entitled Reflections featuring 39 artists and their amazing interpretations of self portraiture. Refreshments will be served. Save the date!
I'm happy to say my piece "The Healing" has been accepted into "Reflections", a new exhibit at Hamilton Street Gallery in Bound Brook, NJ! The show runs from Jan 28th thru Mar 14th with an opening reception on Sun, Jan 28th, 2 - 5 pm.
