Politikal ang lipstick tungod nagsimbolo kini og dugang kaisog;
Tanang butang politikal, tanang butang puwa,
ug kung dili man, mamahimong puwa,
puhon.

Magpaorganisa!

MAKIGBISOG ALANG SA YUTA, PAGKAON, UG HUSTISYA!
YUTA ALANG SA PAGKAON DILI SA NEGOSYO!
BADYET ALAN SA PAGKAON DILI SA PAGPAMIG-OT!
BUGAS DI BALA! PAGKAON DI PAGPAMIG-OT!
LOKAL NGA PRODUKSYON DILI IMPORTASYON!
SEGURIDAD SA PAGKAON! IHUNONG ANG PAGPATAY SA MGA MAG-UUMA!

CALL FOR ARTWORK SUBMISSION!
This month of October, we commemorate “Peasants Month” as recognition to the farmers as one of the primary contributors to our country’s socio-economic development from the local to the global level.
With the malicious advancement of this fascist state, farmers have been deeply affected by how this state handled the food crisis and the conditions of Filipino farmers. Farmers continue to live in poor conditions because this government continues to shut their eyes and cover their ears with our farmers’ pleas. Farmers feed people’s mouths, but they themselves barely have any food on their tables.
Along with his anti-poor policies is his tight and abusive
grip among those that dare to call out his incompetencies and under-the-table agenda. The state has done anything but substantial to improve our farmer’s conditions.
Hence,“Bungkalan: Salmot sa Panguma” is a campaign to amplify the calls of our marginalized peasants and farmers. Bungkalan which means to till refers to the practice of tilling idle lands to grow short-term crops for farmers to sustain over the tiempo mu**to or the dead-season between planting and harvesting of sugar crops. This practice is in reaction to the failure of the government to implement genuine agrarian reform and the landlords’ refusal to distribute the land to the tillers
Recontextualizing this, the Bungkalan refers to the virtual occupation through social media the calls of the Filipino farmers. It aims to:
I. Amplify the calls of marginalized farmers through artworks
II. Gather the widest support possible from fellow artists in mainstreaming farmers’ issues
III. Reach the broadest audience to raise awareness and facilitate discussion on the real plight of Filipino farmers

JUSTICE FOR JENNIFER LAUDE! JUNK VFA NOW!

The University of the Philippines Cebu University Student Council denounces Duterte's subservience to US interest in his order of 'absolute pardon' to US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton. We clamor for the termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement and demand justice for Jennifer Laude.

Jennifer Laude, a transwoman was brutally murdered by the hands of Pemberton. Her case rooted from pure hate crime and has sparked protests from all over the world. Upon the arrest of Pemberton, this foreign murderer received the most endearing care in 'prison' while we can just recall how he cold-bloodedly ended the life of one of our own people. He was given a 10-year homicide sentence and was confined in an exclusive facility in Camp Aguinaldo instead of serving his sentence in the National Bilibid Prison, where he should belong.

The Visiting Forces Agreement brought US troops in Philippine soil for joint military exercises. This 'strengthened' the US-Philippines relations. Moreover, this agreement had enabled Pemberton to be under US jurisdiction for the murder of Jennifer Laude. This gives a leeway for US troops to escape from our justice system.

Last September 7, 2020, Duterte pardoned Pemberton which was then followed by Bureau of Correction Chief Gerald Bantag's approval of Pemberton's release order last September 10, 2020. Pemberton is now comfortably waiting for his release which will be "completed by the weekend," as per Justice Secretary Menard Guevarra.

All of these happened while Laude's family express dissent to this unfair decision as they seemed to be double-crossed by their former family counsel Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque who instantly switched face and is now justifying the pardon. Pemberton should rot in jail for the murder he had committed.

Now, Duterte granted him 'absolute pardon' for the murder he had committed further perpetuating a macho-feudal culture. A culture which he and his puppet government readily and easily bows down to the interests of US. Even under this pandemic, he gladly shows sympathy to Pemberton while leaving the Filipino people uncared for.

Duterte and Pemberton should both rot in jail for the crimes they committed!

Sociology = Social Practice 🖤

[FEATURES]

Sociology for the masses: transcending discourse and stimulating action
by: Ara Lorico

“As students, you are called upon to employ and maximize your sociological insights to spot the problems, the crisis in the government — the conflicts in the state programs.”

Professor Gerardo Lanuza, Ph. D., who is fondly known as Sir Gerry, imparted this challenge upon those who took part in the commencement of SangKAPP, a webinar series organized by the Rise for Education Alliance - College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (R4E - CSSP).

Sir Gerry is a professor from the Department of Sociology and is the head of Contend-UP, an organization for educators promoting nationalism and militancy for social change.

During SangKAPP's first session, Professor Lanuza made clear that sociology is more than a mere discipline under the social sciences. The study of social problems itself plays a key role during this pandemic.

Sociology in theory

For beginners, sociology is known as a social science discipline that zeroes in on society — its development and complexity, and how human beings interact within it. However, there is more to sociology than meets the eye.

Prominent sociologists have defined the discipline in various ways. For Emile Durkheim, sociology is a study based on “social facts.” Through this definition, he claimed that various aspects of society affect the actions undertaken by individuals.

On the other hand, Max Weber defined sociology as the study of “social actions.” This concept claims that a person's action can influence the meaning an individual attaches to it.

Sociology does not rely on superstitions to justify events. It unifies the diverse elements of society into a coherent and comprehensive area of study. Sociology “explains things scientifically by tracing its roots and causes in the interactions of human beings.” As a discipline under the social sciences, it aims to scrutinize the standards imposed on people that have long been deemed as normal and rational.

The pandemic through a Sociological lens

The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a massive health crisis and plunged the country into uncertainty. Despite primarily being a medical concern, the Duterte administration opted to adopt militaristic methods to combat the virus.

For Professor Lanuza, repeatedly implementing militaristic lockdowns is not the solution to the pandemic. On the contrary, it is part of a larger problem that sociology must address. He also stressed that medical solutions, although extremely necessary, are not the only cure.

Addressing the pandemic must be done in a “dialectical" manner. Simply put, the key to eradicate this crisis is to integrate all sectors within society to work together in attainment of a proper solution.

However, authoritarianism and violence continue to thrive. Recently, paramilitaries destroyed another Lumad school in Bukidnon. This is further proof that militaristic tactics perpetuate oppression and exacerbate inequality. The Duterte administration has failed its people and worsened the situation of the marginalized.

This injustice continues on with the romanticization of the concept of "Filipino resiliency."

The start of online classes has proven that many people continue to romanticize the idea of defying the odds just for the sake of continuing one's education. Filipinos have long been conditioned to celebrate this, but reality tells a different story — the need to undergo such hardship proves that the Philippine education system remains bereft of progress.

The glorification of “Filipino resiliency” is weaponized by the government to mask its incompetence.

Despite the innate resiliency Filipinos are claimed to possess, President Duterte has constantly regarded the people as “pasaway” or disobedient. He has also ironically blamed unruly Filipinos for the virus' unchecked spread while his incompetent governance has largely left us to our own devices.

These contradictions lead to the concept of neoliberalism, entailing that we are to survive on our own, be held accountable for occurrences we did not cause, and be unable to hold a neglectful government accountable.

To address this pandemic, sociological imagination, or simply a framework that considers society in its totality, is mandatory.

“Kaso, ang fragmented nitong gobyerno mo eh,” Lanuza argued.

(However, your government is fragmented.)

The Duterte administration has imposed policies that form part of an oppressive and militaristic framework. Moreover, with the concept of totality in mind, the issues concerning the medical field are never apart from that of the other sectors of society.

Unfortunately, President Duterte and his cronies believe otherwise.

A dire call for action

“We cannot remain as spectators, ‘di tayo pwedeng tagapanood — we cannot remain strangers,” Professor Lanuza stated in an attempt to make sociologists realize that mere discussions will never suffice.

(We cannot remain as spectators, we should not be bystanders — we cannot remain strangers.)

He stressed the need for action — sociologists or not, we must endeavor to engage. As students, we must be able to observe, identify and lay out solutions for societal matters. Lanuza called on several sociologists to do their part in pacifying the worsening effects of this pandemic to Filipino society.

When actress Angel Locsin voiced out her insights on attending a protest by saying, “You don’t need to go out to use your voice,” she also underscored the significance of one’s involvement even without an inclination for the social sciences.

(READ: https://entertainment.inquirer.net/384128/angel-locsin-to-those-making-up-an-excuse-to-not-join-protests-you-dont-need-to-go-out-to-use-your-voice)

Despite the lack of experience in the field of Sociology, Angel Locsin exhibited critical behavior befitting the national situation. While protesting against ABS-CBN’s forced shutdown, she served as a voice for the masses and set an example for other celebrities on how to utilize their influence.

Sociology for the masses

Obtaining a degree is not the paramount requirement to be a sociologist. Having a critical eye and an empathetic perspective are more important to successfully dissect and understand society and address the problems that plague it.

We do not have to use highfalutin words and speak "like a seasoned Sociologist would" all the time. What we need to speak are words made for the masses to make them realize and understand “their pulse, appropriate what has been said and translate it as a voice.”

“We do Sociology with the masses, for the masses, with the masses — para mabago natin ang lipunan,” Professor Lanuza stated.

(We do Sociology with the masses, for the masses, with the masses — so we can change society.)

Under this fascist regime that is desperately clinging to power, Sociology encourages the disruption and disturbance of the system — the debunking of oppressive norms, negligent administration, and militaristic tactics that continue to be normalized by the government even during a crisis.

This COVID-19 pandemic and the many ills of Philippine society will never be solved if only a few would condemn and act on the insensitivity of the Duterte administration to the needs of its people.

“Natatakot ang mga may kapangyarihan kapag tayo ay nagsasama-sama (sa labas),” Prof. Gerardo Lanuza stated.

(Those with power cower when we stand collectively [in the streets].)

Let this be a forceful reminder. Let us not fear and refrain from using our voices and taking action. We must act as one to overthrow this tyrannical administration that continues to scourge the Filipino society.

STORIES BEHIND THE SCREEN:

The UPC USC x Tug-ani Collaboration for the Campaign

As students gear up for an unprecedented school year largely based on online platforms and distance modules, we remember those who are left with no means of income, who suffer a toxic home environment, and who are forced to choose between mental health and enrolment. We remember the less privileged, and we condemn the recently magnified, long-standing issue of education being made for the rich while the maases are forced to either keep up or suffer.

It can be recalled that as early as March, universities struggled to continue the ongoing school year through distance learning as quarantine measures took full effect. Even the University of the Philippines, a supposed pro-student institution, took more than a month to stop beating a dead horse and finally end the semester. But even this was shrouded in controversy as the call for mass promotion was unheard and details regarding grades and unfinished works were cloudy.

On the ground, such actions left UP students confused, pressured, and angry.

"Thoughts of school works, pandemic and family problems made it hard for me to sleep and there were times that I wished I didn’t have to wake up, but well, I have to wake up to pass my school requirements and finally be free from the burden," writes Tina*, an incoming junior from UP Cebu.

The eldest among four, Tina is presented with other problems besides her pursuit of education. The sudden quarantine left her family with no source of income, and a late distribution of the Social Amelioration Program (SAP) funds and other relief goods forced her to exhaust personal emergency and saving funds. A family plagued with fevers, colds, and chills only added to her problems.

"In short, thoughts of [the] pandemic, my sibling getting sick, no idea where to get money from, family fights and academic burdens made it so hard for my brain to function," Tina continues, "After passing all my requirements, my body that felt so heavy suddenly felt light. I could properly focus on my family’s problems and give myself a sigh of relief, no pressure but financial thoughts are still there bothering me."

With a new academic year looming on the horizon, Tina, along with the rest of her peers, wonder if the challenge is even possible. "I’m not the only one who had online classes. I have my siblings who have online classes with the use of parents’ phones and my phone. The slow internet isn’t helping either. Even the atmosphere here won’t be that much of a help. I just wish we could survive this sem and things would finally be okay after this year" she adds.

Tina's situation is just one among thousands. In the middle of pandemic where death is rampant and government response is inadequate, one is allowed to wonder why education has surged to be one of the top sources of stress and anxiety.

One possible answer is a culture of elitism in education. People with resources at their disposal will always have a natural advantage, yet they still seem to be the exact demographic that is being catered to by UP and like-minded institutions. Not Tina, not the children of the working class, not the marginalized. Calls for compassion, policy changes, and better learning schemes are left ignored, and the hope of the nation is pressured to join a school year which promises grades but no learning; advancement, but no progress. Honor is replaced with apathy, and excellence has been swapped for mediocrity.

In a paradigm of uncertainty, we are certain that education should not come at the cost of survival.
