Since 1973, the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) has served as a center for national science leadership development & support of science.
The Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) is a unique organization representing the breadth of science and engineering research disciplines through its member societies and federations. CSSP member societies are represented by their presidents, president-elects, and recent past presidents of leading scientific societies and federations whose combined membership is over one million.
Founded in 1973, CSSP has served as a center for national science leadership development, a strong voice in support of science, and the premier forum for national science policy development and open, substantive exchanges on current issues encompassing the full spectrum of science, engineering, and mathematics. CSSP is committed to “Advancing Leadership in Science and Technology” and to establishing policies and programs that will ensure a bright future for 21st century science. CSSP provides its members ready access to the top research and education leadership nationwide. The organization’s nimble structure provides for a high degree of involvement and participation by its members in debates, task forces, committees, publications, and projects. CSSP seeks its members’ spectrum of views and consensus on major issues affecting its constituent communities. National leaders from government, universities, industry, nongovernmental organizations, and the media also seek CSSP’s views. The CSSP meetings are a transformative opportunity for current and rising leaders in scientific and professional societies to hear and learn from scientific pioneers, top political and thought leaders, and leadership experts, as well as exchange information about best practices in scientific societies with their peers. Only CSSP brings together leaders from the full gamut of scientific and engineering research disciplines with outstanding thinkers and visionaries. In the area of advocacy, CSSP continues its long-standing collaboration with other science and technology societies and coalitions in advocacy. Many of CSSP’s societies have benefited from these collaborations on important issues such as Federal R&D and STEM funding; societies will now benefit more from CSSP’s advocacy activities on Capitol Hill, ensuring even greater access to new Congressional leaders. CSSP is supported by dues and contributions from the supporting societies and contributions from Institutional Affiliates.

It's International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Former CSSP Board Chair, Dr. Deborah Bronk, currently CEO and President of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is right, "...addressing climate change is an all hands-on-deck moment, and half those hands belong to women."
Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, an important opportunity to reflect on the many scientific contributions women have made, and all they have to offer for our future.

On Sunday, Dec 6 CSSP presented its Certificate for Leadership and Achievement to Dr. Christopher Murray and his team at the Institute for Health Metrics & Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington developing the COVID-19 projections tool to provide worldwide forecasts of the demands on healthcare resources due to the COVID-19 pandemic. https://cssp.memberclicks.net/leadership-citation http://www.healthdata.org/covid

IHME’s COVID-19 projections were developed in response to requests from the University of Washington School of Medicine and other US hospital systems and state governments working to determine when COVID-19 would overwhelm their ability to care for patients.

Congratulations to our president, Dr. Deborah Bronk, who was recently elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science!
She was recognized for substantial research advances on the marine nitrogen cycle and for leadership in the ocean science research community.
Since 1874, the AAAS has awarded the title of fellow to recognize important contributions to STEM disciplines. This year's class of newly elected fellows will join the ranks of distinguished AAAS Fellows, including inventor Thomas Edison, sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois, and anthropologist Margaret Mead.

The CSSP has just finished its 3 day virtual Leadership Development Workshop, and I am beyond proud of the volunteer tech team who added so much to its success.
