Storytime!
So I figured I'd share a bit of insight on my work with . I've had the pleasure of partnering with them on a few events - most recently a crochet workshop/art education series called "Spinning A Yarn". I pick a piece in their collection and crochet something inspired by the work. They just did a wonderful write up on the event on their blog. I posted it a few days back.
Here's a bit more context on why this is important to me. Many don't know that the Phillips Collection has a location East Of The River near my home. People believe that we have to leave the area to see incredible art and to be the artists we want to be. I have struggled with that feeling myself. I often don't feel safe enough to be my full self, my authentic they, the creative that I truly am. Because of that I have second guessed and impostered myself out of amazing opportunities.
This is was an opportunity to say yes to myself. To take the challenge of interpreting artwork I enjoy and translating it to my medium, with my meaning, my purpose.
The piece above is inspired by Picasso's Reclining Figure. I spoke last night on my reasons for choosing this piece, the intentions behind using granny square for the work, etc. when I shared, the liaisons from Phillips were intrigued by the depth I brought to conceptualizing the work. It was refreshing to receive that response.
We are in a time of "instant art". We want our videos in 30 second blocks, our narratives to be spoon fed. It's not lost on me that I too am feeding the algorithm and suckling at the media conglomerates teet. But this is an invitation to create something. Take the time to feel the process. To learn and fail and try. To celebrate every step and admire those that are in their process of doing the same.

This Friday.

The biggest thing getting in the way is not seeing ourselves as the artists we are. I have been recording work on other people's projects for years. I've got verses scattered on albums for the past 2 decades. I've been booking artists for the past 2 decades including musicians and nationally recognized poets. I have DJ'ed weddings, house shows, and club districts.
So why did I wait until the LAST DAY to complete the DC-Area Music Census? For the same reason you haven't done it... Second guessing myself.
This year I'm done with that. August, the plan comes together. Cause we can all win.

Y'all! Next Wednesday is gonna be something special. 450k open mic featuring .
