We Wish Everyone a Safe and Happy Fourth of July!!!

On Saturday, June 22nd, around 40 area children, ages 6-17 gathered at the Cosmosphere for Space to Grieve 2019 Kids Kamp. The children in attendance shared a common and painful bond, they all have lost a loved one. The children spent periods over the course of the day participating in meaningful, emotional work alongside 22 Hospice and Home Care volunteers and staff then were able to take well needed breaks from the emotional work to enjoy fun, educational and interactive Space activities hosted by Cosmosphere staff. The bereavement activities helped the children gain understanding, identify feelings, and commemorate the child's loved one. The children at this years camp explored the many feelings that can be experienced with the death of a loved one and learned healthy and creative ways to express them by creating a cup painting on a canvas. They participated in a yoga class lead by Sunflower Yoga instructor, Letty Shaw, who taught the children ways to help them deal with stress and introduced relaxation techniques to help them reflect about their past, present and future. Each child was provided with a yoga mat to take home to give them their own space to implement these helpful movements and relaxation techniques. Each child was given an afghan donated by local groups, offered as a tool of comfort and permission for each child to wrap up in their blanket and allow themselves time to grieve. To end the day the volunteers, children and their families gathered outside on the HCC campus sharing in a special time of remembrance with each family member receiving a bubble wand to release bubbles in memory of their loved one. We were happy with the addition of a parent/guardian session, offering information on how they can help themselves and their child find a way forward through their grief. Space to Grieve 2019 Kids Kamp was a very meaningful event for all that participated. With great gratitude, we recognize that it was only possible due to the support and collaboration with the Cosmosphere, our Hospice & Home Care volunteers and the many local donors.
