I used tissue with water and wood glue to create the house. Clay for door and old broken jewelry too!

Pumpkins made from cloth napkins, old shirts, a pillowcase and scrap fabric. Decorated with stems made from tree/shrub prunings, raffia, jute and other odds and ends. Very little had to be purchased for this project. Headed to the October Farmers Market.

Me, Dream cars Rossberg , I am an artist who collects and recycles these old sewing machines and I transform them into miniature cars. They will thus have a new life, even if they would have been better off sewing

Today I was pleasantly surprised to discover original genuine hardwood floor underneath 3 layers of linoleum and carpet in my dining room. I was almost positive my 1860s farm house didn’t have any hardwood flooring mostly because I checked my living room and kitchen and there was only subfloor. I was ready to start laying down plywood and then vinyl flooring until I decided to lift the last layer of linoleum. Glad I did. Unfortunately it is covered in that black linoleum glue. Any tips for removing the glue and restoring this beautiful floor back to its original state? Also is there anyway to tell how old my flooring is? I noticed it is tongue and groove and I’m aware it probably wasn’t installed when the house was built.

The lath and plaster ceiling needs to come down and be replaced with drywall. Can the WOOD crown stay in place?
If it needs to be removed, what are the chances is salvageable
Edit: more than half of the plaster is separating from the lath and to repair it would require a ton of plaster washers and skim coating the entire ceiling (also because texture wouldn't match). I thought starting fresh would be overall easier and also then I never have to do it again or worry about it catastrophically failing and hurting someone. But removing and potentially destroying the crown is a significant negative draw back
Edit 2: added photo of the whole ceiling. Someone tell me it's worth repairing and I'll pursue that route

Unsolicited endorsement here…
Some folks on this group were professing their love of something called ‘Howard Feed & Wax’ to bring life back to woodwork. So I ordered a bottle, and when it arrived today, I tried it out on our swing door.
120 SECONDS LATER… Just wow! I didn’t even realize how ‘thirsty’ my woodwork even was! (And now, I unfortunately must rub it into all the woodwork because that door has set the bar high for the rest of the room. 😂
Curious what other products folks swear by for caring for a 100+ yr old house? For cleaning porcelain? Polishing brass? Etc., etc. Im happy to hear what’s working for you guys. I’m all ears!

1920s Bungalow
Update : added pics of home and sides. I just want to add curb appeal. You guys make me feel better about the brick.
-Tuckpointing sounds like a good idea
-will talk to a mason too
-someone brought up adding trim colors that balance the brick make a better look and I never thought of that.
Thanks everyone!
—————
I really don’t want do paint the brick but it’s so worn & weathered. What else can I do? Is there a stain that won’t damage it?
Edit: we already pressure washed it when we painted the trim. Didn’t get any better. My neighbor told me the mismatched bricks were a luxury back then. People paid extra for that back then. It just looks so worn and sad to me.
I know paint prevents it from breathing and causes issues over time. Have done enough research to know that’s a bad idea, and I hate painted brick anyway. I’m team let the brick look like bricks.

Im looking for some creative input on how to make this dark grey, dull brick fireplace look better. It looks so dark and nondescript and it drags down the room and it’s a beautiful room. It’s in an older cottage on the Ottawa River in Ontario. It needs to be repainted, preferably a colour that will make make it the focal point and add some cheer to the room. No comments on the TV please. I know it’s not great but the dark grey paint is worse. Wall colour is a nice soft grey. Room is bright and sunny.

This is the ceiling in my bedroom. How would you fix this? I want to just cover the whole ceiling with 4x8 white shiny masonite but hubby says that is too much work. My other idea was to just fill this with a spray plaster and smooth it off. Never done this before. We have 2 more places in other rooms like this. We did put a new roof on the house last summer. so no more leaks.

Does anyone know what this is? Wallboard? What's the wood behind it called?
Our house was built in 1938 and has a brick exterior. There are picture rail molding in all of the rooms, so I assumed the walls were plaster. We have a water mitigation company working on our house and they took samples to test for asbestos. It came back negative 😍, but I was surprised when I saw the hole that was cut, it wasn't what I was expecting.

Two dollar table we got at a rummage sale. The veneer was badly damaged and someone had badly painted it an ugly gray. We stripped the old paint and repainted it white with a black top. Used a primer coat and finished with a thin coat of polyurethane. We used oven cleaner to clean the old paint off, then used a white paint sprayed on the legs and side. Brushed on black.

I had been looking for tall planters for my front porch. I haven't found anything that I love that doesn't cost an arm and a leg..so I set out to make my own. With the cost of wood being as high as it is I knew I would be digging into my scrap wood stash. I found a pair of stools on fb marketplace for $5. I thought that if I flipped them over they might make the perfect frames for pots. I have attached before and after pics below.״ -Erica Ellaine

I repurposed a family cradle by putting it on its end & adding glass shelves and I can still display a quilt my mom made when she was a teenager. Win win all around!

Can’t believe this stove still works… it’s from the house I grew up in built in the early 1970s.

My parents home was built in 1948, I never had the privilege of living here when I was young because they used it as a rental for over 40 years to the same family, as I grew up on the dairy. When papa retired in 1997 they moved back home. Papa never really did anything to the house except for major upkeep but he didn't do anything cosmetic. We live out in the county which is kind of considered the country here in my town we have a lot of fields in the back that produce a lot of dust. 11 years ago today my papa went to heaven to join my mama and my family and I have been living here ever since. Being on a fixed income I had to save and buy things one at a time to finally start my kitchen makeover. I would like to know what you guys think of the cabinet colors? And of the wallpaper? My daughter wants to change the cabinet handles to Black what are you guys think?
Just to clarify I just painted these cabinets and am still working on the wallpaper. It had white cabinets and they got to dirty out here. Any suggestions on flooring? Please I should say I'm going for a semi Gothic, Victorian look with colors. Also new little ght fixtures are on order.
Thank you all for the comments

Update: definitely water damage. Contractors found damp spots. Will need to cut out a large section for remediation. What a year..
Oh boy...I want to cry.
Pulled up the decades old carpet from my new-to-me 1910 house. The wood is great in all areas except this. A softball sized hole along the wall. I contacted a carpenter for a quote. Can this be patched?

I’m working in the back part of my house and got this cleaned up. We have an MCM house and this giant planter sits by the back door of my home. I don’t know what to do with it. It’s too tall to use as a bench, we tried and it just becomes the “catch-all” coming in the door. If you have one of these 50’s boxes, what did you do with yours? Thank you! 😄

My husband is insisting that we put up drapes in our dining room. I’m reticent because I really love the open, airy feel of not having the windows covered and I really do love the original 1890 frames and would hate to cover them up (not to mention the holes being drilled into them).
Any suggestions as to how I can install drapery rods without taking away from the beautiful frames?
