From the Rector
Greetings friends!
This past week at Jonah’s Call we continued our summer sermon series going through Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians. I was so excited for you to hear the message because I asked Rebecca to preach with the text being a passage that she has taught on many times as a musician and p***c speaker. This passage in the second chapter of the letter is a passage that has been a great encouragement and guide to both Rebecca and I as artist because it uses a language that relates to the creativity and wonder of God in his creation of humanity, and purpose for us.
Each of us have had times that we don’t feel like we fit in, or that we’re misfits in the land of lost toys (shout out to classic Christmas movies). As musicians and artist, Rebecca and I have definitely felt out of place in the commerce driven, self focused, popularity contest of the music industry (yes, even in the CCM world). Our sound was different, we didn’t move to Nashvegas, and we wrote songs that talked about our struggle along with our redemption. Hearing the Word of God through Paul that “we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which he prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” was and still is of great comfort! All of the ways that I am wired; the quirks and talents, the complexities and personality of the person that I am, were set in motion by the creator for his pleasure and glory. And God has never created junk, or missed his mark. He is very intentional in his actions and purposes.
As Rebecca points out in her message, this workmanship (poiēma) is better translated “masterpiece”. This is our identity, formed in us through Christ Jesus, to be his work of art in the world!
Please take the time to take a listen to Rebecca’s message found on our web site on the “Resources” page. I know you will enjoy it and be encouraged. And join us this Sunday as we continue in our series with chapter 3, “being filled with all the fullness of God”.
Coming up on August 4th, Bishop Alex Cameron will be with us for the Installation of a Rector and two confirmations. It is going to be a glorious day! Don’t miss it. We will also have our monthly Community Meal on that Sunday, so plan on coming to share the meal and having a great time as the body of Christ. If you can, please bring something to share, but please know, there’s always enough at this table. If you haven’t been here in a while, it would be so nice to see you!
And remember, if someone looks at you and says, “well, aren’t you just a work of art”, tell them “thank you!”
God’s peace,
Greg+
