UPDATE: 1:47PM Norfolk Southern has completed their maintenance and Main Street is open.

TRAFFIC ALERT:

Norfolk and Southern has just notified us that they will be performing maintenance on the railroad crossing over Main Street at Wyndale Road (near Walgreens), requiring a temporary road closure on Main Street. The road closure is expected to last approximately 20-30 minutes. This is for everyone's safety, to prevent loose rocks and debris to hitting vehicles below. We will update when the closure has ended.

While work continues on the Main Street Flood Project, we know travel in and around Town has been difficult! We have heard your concerns and are implementing the following to help alleviate congestion in the area of East Main Street:

✔️We are working with VDOT to help keep commercial traffic from coming through East Main Street. Message boards on the interstate and in Town will direct commercial traffic to exits 14 and 17.

✔️Town of Abingdon Police Department will be in the area of Hutton and Valley to help monitor and direct traffic during peak travel times. They will also monitor the intersections throughout the day and step in as needed.

Please note that maintenance to the railroad crossings is scheduled and completed by Norfolk Southern, and not the Town. We know that it has come at an inconvenient time, but work is being completed as quickly as possible and Norfolk Southern should be finished with their maintenance soon.

Though a section of East Main Street is closed while we work on the Main Street Flood Project, our businesses are still open and accessible! The road is closed to thru traffic, but if you're shopping or stopping by for services, you're welcome through! Thank you for supporting our local businesses during this time!

We've had a lot of inquiries about Bulk Trash Pick-up tomorrow! Election Day is not a Town of Abingdon holiday, so trash, brush, and bulk trash pick-up will be on regular schedule!

The Town of Abingdon East Main Street Drainage Project will begin Monday, November 4, 2024. The contractor will begin setting up detours on that Monday, followed by a 14-day closure to through traffic on that section of Main Street. We ask that the community be alert when traveling on East Main Street, exercise caution, and obey any traffic signs.

Local businesses along the Main Street corridor of the project will remain open and accessible to the public.

Detours for westbound traffic will be at Hutton Street and Deadmore Street. Detours for eastbound traffic will be at Tanner Street.
