As I take my dog out for a walk I cut through some woods to to get to a field. As you walk back you will see the trail that cuts through the woods from many years of use. You can see someone's back porch. I loved the look of their red chair sitting on the porch. Today's weather made it easy to plein air paint. "Though the Woods" 10x8 inches acrylic on canvas.

While I was painting today a gentleman came by and shared stories with me about the statue. He said he wanted to make the area around the statue a park.
To me, it is just a statue that I've painted before but to him, it was more. I was willing to learn why it's important to him.
Since he shared his story the painting is named after what he would like the little park to be named.

I wanted to plein air paint this morning but was only able to sketch out the idea. I'll probably me able to work on it inside today since it's so cold.

Today is officially one year since I set up at Plumb Alley Day Festival. I was looking forward to all the amazing things I would do with my art. I wanted to one day have a solo show.
Now, I look back with a thankful heart at all the experiences over this past year. Thank you for supporting and believing in me.

My granddad was a coal miner. The family doesn't have any good pictures of him. He also volunteered for the local rescue squad. The picture was from when he volunteered. I wanted to do it in charcoal. He died when my dad was a boy. He died from a coal mining accident. His name is not on any plaque. The coal mines have long since closed. But coal is still deep in our history. Coal for good or for bad has made this area what it is.
I am a coal miner's granddaughter.
I am who I am because of the mountains.
I am Appalachian.
Coal is not just a mineral, it's a way of life.
So this piece honors those past and present coal miners.
