Okowa Disgraced, Asked To Leave Podium For Representing Atiku At Presidential Debate

The vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, was reportedly disgraced at the presidential debate currently taking place in Abuja.

Naija News earlier reported that the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) in collaboration with Arise Television, organised the debate which is expected to be attended by the four leading candidates.

The debate will take place at 7 pm on Sunday at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

The presidential candidates expected at the debate are Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party’s Rabiu Kwankwaso.

According to the CDD, the candidates were selected based on the performance of their parties in an online survey during which all 18 political parties were listed in alphabetical order.

However, the PDP presidential candidate was not available at the start of the programme but was represented by his running mate.

In a video shared from the venue, some Nigerians were seen asking Governor Okowa to leave the podium because the debate is for presidential candidates.

Moments later, the Delta governor was allowed to stand in for the PDP presidential candidate, who was said to be on his way from Morocco.

Ijaw Elders hit Humanitarian Minister over comment on Bayelsa floods

Ijaw Elders Forum (IEF), yesterday ame hard on the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouk, for saying that Bayelsa State is not one of the 10 top states affected by flood.

The minister’s assertion followed the remark recently made by the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, that she was not humane in treating areas affected by floods in Bayelsa and other parts of the South-South.

Farouk, who recently appeared at the ministerial media briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, had listed Jigawa, Anambra and Kogi as the worst affected states based on the number of displaced persons and the total deaths recorded.

But reacting in a release issued in Lagos by its General Secretary, Mr. Efiye Bribena, the group described the statement as callous, reckless, insensitive and irresponsible.

While challenging the Humanitarian Ministry to come up with a comprehensive post-flood disaster management plan, it restated the urgent need for massive deployment of palliatives to the affected communities in the Niger Delta and other areas of the country to alleviate the suffering of the victims.

The release read in part: “The statement made by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouk, that Bayelsa State is not one of the 10 top states hit by flood without empirical data is not only careless and insensitive but also out of tune with the present reality.

“We all know that the Delta Basin is where all waters flow through from the Niger and Benue rivers to get to the Atlantic Ocean.

“Not unexpectedly, when the flood came, Bayelsa was completely submerged and cut off from the world, leaving the people with no food, medical, etc. Many victims had to take refuge in makeshift camps or sleep on the highways. We do not need to give the list of the countless people, both old and young, who died under the devastating circumstances.

“Sadly, instead of using her office to address the challenge at hand and alleviate the suffering of the victims, all the Minister could do was insult the sensibility of the people by comparing the magnitude of the damages occasioned by the flood disaster.

“Worst of all, no senior Federal Government official has visited the devastated areas except the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Timpre Sylva, who happens to come from Bayelsa. Are we really considered part of this country?”

“For these comprehensive failings of her office, we demand she should be fired by the president. Alternatively, she should, as a matter of urgency, come up with a comprehensive plan for post-flood disaster management and how to repair the damaged infrastructure as is done in other climes.”

The group further urged the Federal Government to put the necessary measures in place to forestall the future occurrence.

Fraud: Lagos APC raises alarm over cloning of Sanwo-Olu’s accounts

The All Progressives Congress, APC, Lagos chapter, has raised the alarm over cloning of the accounts of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu by hired cybercriminals suspected to be opposition parties in the state.

Publicity Secretary of the party, Seye Oladejo, raised the alarm in a statement at the weekend.

The statement, read in part: ”Security agents are on the trail of cybercriminals and their political collaborators who have cloned the accounts of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governorship candidate of the APC.

“The criminals generate spurious correspondences to defame Sanwo-Olu by misinforming the public about an alleged plan to compromise the electoral process.

“This is to whip up public resentment against Sanwo-Olu whose superlative performance and the massive show of support by the electorate are driving the opposition into morbid desperation.

“In clear recognition of the popularity of the ruling progressive party which has been at the helm of affairs since 1999, the opposition has concluded that its waterloo in the governorship election is as sure as day.

“Unable to accept its imminent defeat and driven by the delusion of incurable optimism, the opposition has chosen to abuse the advancement in digital technology by turning to the criminalization of the digital space, hacking and cloning individuals’ accounts to misrepresent them and damage their reputation.

“We have evidence that this evil act is the latest ploy of the opposition to disrupt the harmony that Lagosians have witnessed since the electioneering period began.

“They will not succeed. We have drawn the attention of security agencies to this ugly trend, which Lagosians should note and shun in its entirety.”
