At times, we slip into a resolutely ‘lazy’ mood. We’re not able to write anything new or set up more meetings. We don’t want to clean the fridge or befriend prospective clients. All we want is to loll on the sofa, dip into a book, wander to the shops, or soak in the bath. We might merely sit by the window and stare at the clouds

In such states, we’re often stigmatised as ‘lazy’ by friends or our conscience. Laziness feels like a sin against the activity of modernity. But the real threat to happiness may lie in our inability to be ‘lazy’ enough. Outwardly idling does not mean we are unproductive. When busy, we execute plans rather than reflect on their value. Profound dilemmas emerge when we distance ourselves from immediate demands.

We need to distinguish between emotional and practical hard work. Busy people may avoid understanding their real feelings about their work. They evade large questions: What am I trying to do? What do I enjoy?

Our lives might be more balanced if we re-allocated prestige towards those who allow time for reflection. The heroically hard worker might be the person gazing out of the window, occasionally writing down ideas. The point of ‘doing nothing’ is to clean up our inner lives. We need to risk being accused of laziness to develop projects we can be proud of.
