Yoo, so proud of my man Anthony for winning BC ONE Belgium 🤯 And then to have half the line-up be Battle Droids Crew … It was the plan but I’m still surprised we actually pulled it off.

Proud of the whole squad 🤝

You know, after many many years, the best part of being the coach is to still be able to be part of their story that you have set in motion all those years ago.

So many obstacles, challenges and losses have passed but after +10 years we clearly have our best years still ahead of us so buckle up 😙

Check out this short video on how Anthony made it all happen because your day is probably also waiting for you 🎯

Looking for the best tip for battle ever?
(Read here)⬇️

You might know me as the funny guy in red with great powermove tutorials on YouTube.
However for years now I have the privilege to coach and assist a large number of high level individuals for competitions, solo as well as collective.

Over the years I have managed to pick-up a lot of lessons and translate them in to rules to ensure the speed of evolution of my students. Many based on my own experiences in competition and later refined by applying them to my students.

Physical, technical, cultural & traditional knowledge is a big piece of the pie, but when working with individuals at the highest level, the psychological aspect of the game becomes a major piece of the puzzle.

So what is the winning mindset?

(Read carefully)

***

In my book, the winning mindset is ability to work for something as if your life depends on it,
But have the skill to detach emotionally from any expectations.

***

Let's break this down,
First of all I would like to say that I believe this mindset is only appliable for breaking and/or any other artistic activities within a competitive setting.

"Ability to work for something as if your life depends on it"

Obviously, to be good at anything in life you have to invest time and effort. The harder you work at something the better you become. This is well known common sense and the first step towards standing out in your field.
Only a handful of individuals (on average 3%) push to this level and become the top tier of their field.

"The skill to detach emotionally from any expectations"

This part of the tip is the gold. How to become the 3% of the 3% ?!
When investing so much time and effort in to your craft, us humans are emotionally involved by the idea that we want to achieve a certain goal. For example: Winning a specific Battle or seeking approval from certain people.

In a competitive surrounding, specially in breaking, there are aspects of the dance that persist in a relaxed environment, mindset and surrounding. For example the emotional and instinctive connection to music, the light touch and excellence of ex*****on & things like your overall expression and character in cooperation with your crowd, judges and adversary.

When letting go of any expectation in your breaking journey, specifically in competition, your receptors towards these aspects and your ability to apply them amplify massively.

So to put in to BBoy language:

The less you give a sh*t about winning,
The more you will smoke the adversary.
(Specially if you really work your ass off)
The more you care, you more you will screw up.

If you suffer from pressure at battle, learn to trust your training, investments and skills to a point where you know things will work out for you. The work must be done behind the scenes in the gym, not during the competition itself.

The work will speak for itself once the time comes so rushing the process will lead to additional time loss (and loss of good footage of you at competition).

A final word,
The tip above has been proven effective time and time again in my own career as I suffered from many loses during my upcoming years. Losses led to me lowering expectations and pushing away the idea of "fitting in" with the "better dancers" from that era. This shift of mindset led to my biggest streak of wins as a young breaker. However, during that time I was not at all aware of this mindset, I was just sick of loosing.

At a much later stage in my life, I got injured and did not have the time to really prepare for battles, this led to me competing, again with no expectations. Guess what, best rounds of my life lol.
I also often see this happening with students, as well as top BBoys over the world who dance with a "I don't really care" mentality.

Caring and desperately wanting to be the best in breaking, like you are in some kind or Life or Death "Step up Movie" simply does not fit the "fresh" attitude and image of BBoys these days. So work your ass off, but then just enjoy the moment as it comes.

If you enjoy this type of content, knowledge and content I strongly recommend you to scroll through my YouTube Channel as I currently have more than 200 videos available for free.

More content and tutorials will follow soon.

Now give me 5 M**O push-ups.

My story

My story is simple, yet not simple to duplicate. As a kids I had trouble focussing on things that wouldn’t interest me. But things that did catch my eye allmost got me in a obsessed-state giving me the power to focus all my energy and dedication in that what I love, the things we call passions.

- 1987: I was born in Church Village, Wales on february the 13th. I would go to nercery school in the U.K. making english my mother language.

-1992: Moved to Paris, France where my mother would work at Disneyland Paris what would have a major inpact on my creativity. This is where primary school established a decent foundation for French.

-1997: Moved to Antwerp, Belgium where I did my secondary studies and learned how to speak Dutch.

-1999: After seeing “B-Boy Kujo” and others breakdancing in the Music video of “Run DMC - It’s like that” I fell in love with the HipHop culture. Without wasting time I looked up where and when I could practice this dance.

-2006: The Founding of Team Shmetta. In co-operation with another talented B-Boy from Gent by the name of Sam De Waele, we realised that in order to be able to reach an international level within the Breaking-scene we had to colaborate with the strongest B-Boy’s from the whole country. That ment working with Dancers from other city’s asking more travel time, work and dedication. We gathered Belgium’s best and most consistent B-Boy’s at the time founding a crew that would change the Belgian breaking-scene for ever.

-2009: Team Shmetta wins the Battle Of The Year Benelux giving us the tittle of the best B-Boy Team in Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg and opening the doors to world finals all across the world. We where the only Flemish crew who had ever won this tittle. We would win the competition 3 more times in the future.

-2010: Won the Belgian RED BULL TAKE ONE, giving me the tittle of the official Belgian Champion. A moment that truely showed me that anything is possible for those who work for it.

-2011: Got picked up for a supporting lead role in the motion Picture “Streetdance 3D II” starting acting career and boosting my dance career. I had the chance to work side by side with great talents like Sofia Boutella, Tom Conti and many others opening doors for other roles in commercials and TV-shows.

-2012: Team Shmetta wins the R16 Europe, giving us entry to the world finals of R16 in Seoul, South Korea, one of the most prestigious Breaking competitions and a goal we had on our list for a long time. Our show managed to shock thousands of fans across the world, launching my passion for choreographing.

-2013: Founded the “Battle Droid Factory” the first danceschool that would give young dancers the chance to become proffessional B-Boy’s and B-girls. By using allmost 15 years of knowledge and experiance, I decided to give back to the culture and take the training of our new generation really serious.

-2015: After hundreds of titles, the winning of championships come to an end after a number of serious lower back injuries that would end up in a hernia. A 2 year stop gave me the chance to focus more on the promissing new generation. In 2017 I would start competing again after minor surgery to the lower-back.

-2016: Battle Droids in colaboration with Fresh Allstars win the first ever Battle Of The Year Kids World final against the Russian kids putting Belgian youth on the international map, something never done before. Video’s shock the world and go viral after Stance, a famous online-media channel, uploads the video to their channel.

-2017: Battle Droids win the Battle Of The Year Benelux Adults, Kids and Best Showcase. Following in the footsteps of Team Shmetta, The Battle Droids went on to the the World Finals to be the first Belgian Crew ever to make it to the Battle rounds (final rounds) of the adult world finals.
